Winners 2021Young Plumber of the Year

Akida Shimamoto | Southern National Finalist

Akida Shimamoto Profile

Akida Shimamoto is the Young Plumber of The Year Southern regional finalist for 2021! Back in 2019 Akida made it to the regional competition in just his first year of entering, now on his second attempt at the event he’s made it to the finals. We spoke with Akida to find out a little more about what made him want to enter the competition and how he thinks he might go in the final, coming up in February this year.

In 2017 Akida began his apprenticeship to become a plumber. It was his daughter’s grandfather who got him into plumbing – as he is also one. The Young Plumber of The Year competition first caught Akida’s attention when he heard the story of a previous winner. “I thought to myself, that doesn’t sound too bad of a competition to get involved in - I might have to give it a go.”

“My first year entering the competition was great, having the opportunity to meet with other like-minded people in the trade, reps and company owners from around the region was great. The whole atmosphere was exciting and something I really enjoyed being a part of,” he shares.

For the 2021 event Akida felt as though the theory test was his strong point, “I’m confident in my practical abilities leading up to the final, but I’m also still studying for to sit my registration next year so it’s good to have the most up-to-date theory already in my mind.” says Akida.

Akida shares that he’s not so much nervous to head into the final but more so excited! His advice for anyone who might be considering entering Young Plumber of The Year, or joining the plumbing trade is that they should go ahead and do it: “Give it everything you have, especially if you’re just starting out as you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

The Southern region wishes Akida the best of luck for the finals set to be held in Hamilton on February 19, 2022!
