Winners 2021Young Plumber of the Year

Blake Patrick | Northland National Finalist

Blake Patrick Profile

Blake Patrick, a 25-year-old local plumber from Whangārei is the 2021 Northern regional finalist for the Young Plumber of The Year competition. We spoke with Blake to find out a little more about him, what made him want to enter the competition and how he thinks he might go in the final, coming up in February this year.

Blake first began his plumbing career back in November 2015. At the time the prospect of university courses didn’t really stand out to him – but a career in Plumbing sure did! He decided to give it a shot and the rest is history.

The YPOTY competition caught Blake’s eye in 2017. Since then, he has entered each year and made it to the Northern regional finals four times. For this year’s regional event he knew the competition would be tough, “I didn’t go in expecting to win, but I back myself as being a knowledgeable plumber and knew I would try my best.” Blake says.

“Although I felt as though I did well in the theory test, as well as majority of the practical, it was the backflow prevention device that was the most challenging for me during the competition.

“I have to admit I’m a bit nervous going into the finals as I haven’t tested myself at that level in the competition before. However, I’m always working to improve my skills and knowledge base so I’m excited to see how I go!”

When asked what advice he would give to other young Kiwis who are considering a career in plumbing Blake said, “It is an awesome trade to get into, you get to experience a wide range of skills and opportunities whilst also meeting a lot of knowledgeable tradespeople on the job – I’d encourage them to be openminded and take opportunities as they come.”

Northland wishes Blake the best of luck for the finals set to be held in Hamilton on February 19, 2022!
