With 28 years of experience in the plumbing industry, Mike Wilson is a seasoned professional dedicated to excellence. He holds qualifications as a Certifying Plumber, Gasfitter, and Drainlayer, reflecting his extensive expertise in the field.
Mike has actively contributed to the industry through his involvement in various organizations. He has been a member of the Waikato Master Plumbers for the past 15 years, serving on the Executive Committee and holding the position of President from 2016 to 2017, and currently. Additionally, he is part of the Plumbers Gasfitter & Drainlayers Board Liaison Group and has chaired the Wintec/Te Pukenga Employment Engagement Group for the past 12 years.
Mike’s advice for the ten finalists in the YPOTY competition is simple: “Back yourself; you know more than you think.” His favorite aspect of the competition is being part of an initiative that showcases the best up-and-coming leaders in the industry, as well as promoting the plumbing profession to a wider audience—an endeavor he takes great pride in.
With 23 years of experience in the plumbing and gas industry, Aaron Jamieson brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise. His career spans five years in the merchant side and 18 years focused on plumbing, gasfitting, and drainage. Aaron holds multiple qualifications, including Plumber, Gasfitter, Drainlayer, IQP Backflow, Limited Electrical, and Heat Pump installations.
Aaron is an active member of the Master Plumbers and the New Zealand Home Heating Association (NZHHA), where he currently serves on the Executive Committee. His commitment to the industry is evident in his leadership roles and dedication to advancing professional standards.
For the ten finalists in the YPOTY competition, Aaron offers this piece of advice: “Stay focused on your goal and believe in yourself. You have worked hard to get here, and you deserve to be here. Stay calm and trust your abilities; give it your best effort. Good luck!”
One of Aaron’s favorite aspects of the YPOTY competition is witnessing young talent showcase their skills and passion for the industry. He believes the competition gets better every year, fostering personal growth and learning.
With 52 years in the plumbing industry, Laurie Nola brings a wealth of experience as a Licensed Plumber. He is also a member of the Altera Apartment Body Corporate, demonstrating his active engagement in both his profession and the community.
Laurie’s advice to the YPOTY finalists is, “Start with the hardest stuff first and make a plan,” emphasising the importance of strategy and preparation.
What Laurie enjoys most about the YPOTY competition is seeing how clever some of the young plumbers are at organising themselves, showcasing their skills and professionalism.
Warren Thompson is a retired Certifying Plumber and Drainlayer with 49 years of experience in the industry. After completing a 10,000-hour apprenticeship, he spent 43 years running Warren Thompson Plumbing. Warren served as President of the Waikato Master Plumbers from 1993 to 1995 and dedicated 38 years to the Waikato Executive. From 2002 to 2005, he was a Director on the Master Plumbers Board and is now a Life Member of the Waikato Master Plumbers Branch.
His advice to the YPOTY finalists is simple: “You’ve already won your Regional Final, which is an outstanding achievement. Be proud of that. Take time to plan each task step by step, trust your judgment, and don’t worry about what others are doing. This is the perfect opportunity to test yourself and showcase everything you’ve learned.”
Warren finds it rewarding to judge the YPOTY competition, where individuals are pushed to achieve the highest level in their careers. He is proud to give back to an industry that has been so rewarding to him.
With 26 years of experience in the plumbing industry, Jason McLaren is a Certified Plumber, Gasfitter, and Drainlayer. His extensive knowledge and hands-on expertise make him a respected figure in the field.
Although not affiliated with any specific industry bodies or organizations, Jason is committed to his craft and the values of professionalism and quality service.
For the ten finalists in the YPOTY competition, Jason advises, “Take your time to plan it out. Start a task and finish it; don’t wish-wash between tasks.” This approach emphasizes the importance of focus and dedication in achieving success.
One of Jason’s favorite aspects of the YPOTY competition is celebrating the industry’s brightest talents. He appreciates how the competition showcases their skills, innovation, and dedication to their craft.
With an impressive 41 years of experience in the plumbing industry, Dale is a Certified Plumber and Gasfitter whose expertise has shaped his successful career. He actively participates in several industry organizations, including the Master Plumbers and the Young Plumbers Club. Additionally, Dale is involved with the Waitemata Rugby Club Committee and the Rosebank Road Association, demonstrating his commitment to both the plumbing profession and his community.
For the ten finalists in the YPOTY competition, Dale advises, “Plan your day and never lose sight of your goal.” This wisdom underscores the importance of focus and determination in achieving success.
Dale’s favorite aspect of the YPOTY competition is witnessing young plumbers take on the world and achieve more than they ever imagined. He finds inspiration in their passion and accomplishments, which reflect the future of the industry.
